Microneedling Q & A

What is microneedling?

Microneedling is an aesthetic technique that uses a pen-like device with dozens of tiny needles that penetrate the surface layers of your skin. This triggers your body’s natural healing response, which promotes the production of collagen and elastin to rebuild the perforated skin and bring back a radiant glow for fresher, younger-looking skin.

At GhentMD, Dr. Aghenta offers microneedling because of its many impressive benefits. The procedure can:

  • Heal scars
  • Reduce acne scars
  • Soften stretch marks
  • Improve fine lines
  • Decrease wrinkles
  • Reduce broken capillaries
  • Lighten hyperpigmentation
  • Decrease pore size
  • Firm and smooth skin texture

Microneedling is an exceptional choice to generate new collagen because it’s minimally invasive and virtually painless, and the procedure requires no downtime.

What happens during a microneedling treatment?

To begin, Dr. Aghenta and his staff clean your skin. Afterward, they apply a topical numbing cream around your face to ensure your comfort throughout the treatment, then wait 15 minutes for the cream to start working. You shouldn’t experience any pain, but you may feel a slight vibrating sensation from the microneedling pen.

The last step is to move the microneedling device around your face in such a way to ensure that your skin rejuvenation is even. The session is quick, lasting roughly 30-60 minutes.

What can I expect after a microneedling treatment?

Within 3-4 days after the procedure, you should begin to see the results of your microneedling treatment. It takes a few weeks to see optimal results because you’re still producing collagen and elastin to resurface your skin.

Most patients don’t experience any severe side effects. If anything, your treatment area might be tender and red, but this goes away within 1-3 days. You should expect to begin peeling 3-5 days after your treatment.

Dr. Aghenta recommends you limit your sun exposure for the week following treatment since your skin is peeling and healing. If you need to be outside, apply sunscreen and wear a hat to cover your face.
